It was a week before we closed on the house, and Robin and the kids were cleaning it. A huge storm blew in, bringing lots of lightening and buckets and buckets of rain. The kids were terrified, but what a good way to get used to a new house! They'll never be that scared again.
Pix of the basement:

About an inch of water accumulated in one corner of the basement, and it was obvious that it had not been the first time. When we moved the metal shelving that had been left by the previous owner, rusty stains were visible on the concrete walls and tile floor.
Robin mopped up half a bucket of water, and thankfully, the seepage didn't continue. When the storm ended, we went outside and saw two areas where water pooled in front of the house. A sunken, damaged piece of concrete walkway needed repair by the front door; that area was allowing some moisture into the crawl space, too. The gutters were clogged, causing water to pour down and pool before flowing under the foundation. Finally, the downspouts needed redirection to the street and away from the house. Mike and his Dad got dirty with that project!
